Electrical contractors (State, classification 5, over $10,000) and the journeyman / master electrician cards parishes and cities issue.
Electrical licenses TradePlumbing & gas
Apprentice, residential limited, journeyman and master plumbers; natural gas fitters; WSPS and medical gas endorsements. Joining LSLBC January 1, 2027.
Plumbing & gas licenses TradeHVAC / mechanical
Mechanical contractors (classification 6): heating, air conditioning, ventilation, duct work and refrigeration over $10,000.
Mechanical licenses TradeGeneral & residential contracting
Commercial work of $50,000 or more, residential construction over $50,000, swimming pools, roofing and the specialty classifications.
Contractor licenses TradeHome improvement
Registration for projects from $7,500 up to $50,000 on an existing residence. No trade exam; $75 for Louisiana-domiciled registrants.
Home improvement registration TradeMold remediation
Licensed for projects of $7,500 or more; the qualifying party needs 24 hours of approved mold training.

Louisiana licenses by project value. The figures below are the Board’s published thresholds under La. R.S. 37:2150.1; each chip opens the source.
Commercial projects, labor and materials; subcontractors and specialty trades on commercial jobs of $50,000 or more.
Any electrical, mechanical or plumbing project exceeding $10,000 needs the commercial license with that classification (5, 6 or 7).
Residential construction exceeding $50,000, and home improvement over $50,000 on an existing residence.
Home improvement projects from $7,500 up to $50,000 on an existing residence. No trade exam.
Mold remediation projects of $7,500 or more; the qualifying party holds 24 hours of approved mold training.
Residential swimming pools over $7,500 need classification 9.1; residential roofing of $7,500 or more needs Residential Roofing or Residential Construction from January 1, 2026.
Asbestos, hazardous waste, lead paint and underground storage tank work is licensed from the first dollar (classification 8).
The State Plumbing Board joins LSLBC
Act 908 of the 2026 Regular Session transfers plumbing licensing and regulation from the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana to the State Licensing Board for Contractors, fully effective January 1, 2027. The Plumbing Board’s offices moved to LSLBC at 600 North Street, Baton Rouge, on September 1, 2026 (interim hours Mon–Thu 7:00–3:30 · 225-346-6352). Plumbing and gas fitter licenses still renew by December 31, 2026 with continuing education.
